Domingo Delicioso #23

Except it’s Monday! Sorry so late!  Busy, busy day.  I was supposed to write on my WIP, too, but I didn’t.  Dang it. Double dang it.  You see how late DD is.

There’s a lot of folks on a NaNoWriMo tear this month.  Hoorah for y’all, go go go!  Personally, the whole idea nearly makes me break out into hives. You see, it is very much a goal-oriented exercise.  And I’ve always chaffed at the mere hint of setting a goal when it comes to my WIP.  There’s a plethora of reasons, and I won’t bore you with them.  Suffice it to say, I run the other way like my hair’s on fire.

Until last week.

divas.jpgLast Monday, The Divas met at a local coffee shop.  The reason for the meeting outside of regular critique group was to discuss–gulp–goals.  Yes, G-O-A-L-S.  Goals.

Bless her heart–Diva M3 kindly e-mailed me after group the week before and mentioned that she and Diva J and Diva L had had extra time to visit, and all three felt like they could use some extra structure, and some brainstorming on the directions they were heading with their writing. Some general pep talk, too.  Methods and strategies to keep the writing on track.  Since they’ve been with me so long, the Divas know my history.  And as usual, Diva M3 knew just what to say to make me feel comfortable with the idea, so I was in.

But my subconscious self fought me the whole time.

First, as I was getting my drink, I left my notebook at the register.  Then, when we were ready to leave, I couldn’t find my keys, and I’d left them at the register, too, so I had to go to lost and found.  It’s as if my id was saying, “You want to get organized?  I’ll show you, my pretty.”

I soldiered on, however, through an absolutely great discussion and session and now have a renewed sense of purpose toward my writing. That sounds a bit more optimistic than I feel, but the idea is positive self-talk.  In any sense, this is working well within the over all self-improvement game plan.  Diva M3 is great at this sort of thing.  A natural-born cheerleader. In fact, she and I attended school together through jr. high and high school, and she actually WAS a cheerleader.  We didn’t run with the same crowd then, but became reacquainted when our paths crossed on this writing journey. I’ve often thought that I wish we’d known each other better in our childhood, but then, I also think, like with other former classmates I’ve become friends with, that maybe the time just wasn’t right yet.

Speaking of the Game Plan, now that I’ve taken that trip around the barn, I’ve lost 17.4 pounds on my Weight Watchers journey, and I have a job interview Tuesday morning. It is for something totally different; it’s something that I hope will give me a sense of security for the future.  I’ll talk more about that another time.  First things first — the interview. Yikes.

Granny is still in the hospital, but has improved.  Thanks for all your prayers. They are helping.  She has a ways to go yet, and we are still going up to the hospital every day, of course.

Brother, Sis-in-Law and Toddler are coming to town this weekend, and we’re really looking forward to that. Be ready for another Toddler story!

Are you guys all sick of coming to my website and seeing, as Willimena so gently put it, a bloodbath?

Hey, Lady Shanny, very cool!  You are an inspiration!

Two hours into the night at their house, Lorraine had Mike in a head-lock and was poking him in the forehead with a dart while screaming, “How good looking is she, Mike? Huh? How well does she market that beer on that commercial?!”

Oh, Crystal, you have no idea how much I look forward to reading more of your work!

One day I’ll get slopes.  Then I’ll be afraid.  ;)

Go get ’em, Kristin!

Google it, and you’ll find a smorgasbord of bleary eyed scribblers who’ve committed to penning a book (good, bad, indifferent…but done!) within the confines of November.

More power to ya, Britta!  If anyone can do it, you can. 🙂  Oh, and Jackie, I’m glad you posted that about the I Love To Write website in your comment!

Tilda Swinton was fabulous, God, I hated her. Never trust a woman withe helmet hair….

Oh, Gabrielle,I just thought of the cemetery scene in Steel Magnolias…”…a brown football helmet!” And Clooney is FAB, a real movie star….

And the Beagle? She doesn’t come in until later. We’ll need her in the story to deal with the hamsters…

Okay……Well, Groovy, kudos to you, too for going for it in NaNo!  BTW, I bet your hair looks great!

I’m not crazy about the characters, nor do I particularly give a rat’s ass what happens to them. In fact, right now, I think I could kill them all off and be done with them.

Aw, Ms. Karen, the more I read, the less pretty NaNo gets!

I work close to where I live in an office that looks onto Blackwattle Bay which is one of the bays that lead off Sydney Harbour. The water this morning was smoky blue shatterproof glass. Gulls glided above it like skaters. Dogs fetched sticks that hovered for a moment, held in place by the deep blue calm before sinking. The air was fresh and new. If I had been standing on a hill the day was so clear I would have been able to see forever ….

Selma, did I understand that English is your second language?  Wow. You sure put it together well now! (Thanks for the time-eater.  My answer is below!)

Yeah for setting some goals(err, a new plan?), seeing a new direction with your writing and success with the weight.

    I’m tickled pink for you.

  2. desperatewriter says:

Thanks Kristen! I betyou look great in pink! 😉

  3. Groovy says:

Goals are fine. It’s deadlines that rot!!!!

How’m I gonna EVER get that beagle in there when I’m up to chapter 5 and Jason has only just met the new fam next door.

Of course I AM already up to the goats, That means the faerie garden can’t be far behind…

  4. Ms. Karen says:

Yay goals… They’re both a blessing and a bane, if you ask me.

NaNo can get to me, mainly because I get so hyped on the story before I can touch it, then when November rolls around my brain says, “Oh, that… yeah, well… whatever.”

But I like it. There’s just something about knowing you’re involved in something along with several thousand like-minded souls, and you’re all sailing around in the creative ether, and it’s all, “yes! I figured out how they’re going to go there, but most importantly WHY they do it in the first place!” then posting your epiphany on the forum and having everyone understand and know your joy.

That particular connection with writers only happens once a year and that’s what makes it special.

Ok, I’m tired. I must go find a nap to take. Great DD, DW!

Thanks, Karen! That’s a neat way to look at the event. Rest Well!
